Cult following…

August 27, 2008

…is usually how people (especially my friends who supported Clinton over Obama) described any Obama supporter (they liked the term “Obamaniacs”). People they saw as being obsessed with the candidate, and not issues. Well tonight it struck me that Hillary’s strongest argument for her supporters to vote for and work to elect Obama was very much directed at this issue of a sort of cult following–the personality over what the person is fighting for.

“I want you to ask yourselves: Were you in this campaign just for me? Or were you in it for that young Marine and others like him? Were you in it for that mom struggling with cancer while raising her kids? Were you in it for that boy and his mom surviving on the minimum wage? Were you in it for all the people in this country who feel invisible?”

A great speech overall–effective and eloquent.
