Mormons: Not So Bad?

February 17, 2009

I don’t think this takes into account the amount of money raised by encouraging members to give. Never cared for the Knights of Columbus either, though.

The Colorado Independent is reporting some interesting figures related to the involvement of major religious institutions in the campaign to reverse a California Supreme Court ruling allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry. For all the flack the LDS Church has gotten for supporting the ballot initiative, its financial investment appears to have been far less than that of other religious organizations.

Total donations to the Prop 8 campaign: $40 million

Donations in cash and services from the Knights of Columbus (Catholic): $1.275 million

Donations in cash and services from Focus on the Family: $727,250

Donations in cash and services from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints: $189,000
