Are teleprompters bad?

March 7, 2009

via POLITICO.com.

Obama’s reliance on the teleprompter is unusual — not only because he is famous for his oratory, but because no other president has used one so consistently and at so many events, large and small.

If you ask me, this is smart for one main reason.  Someone using a teleprompter on TV–with any skill–is only noticed if a) it is pointed out or b) it breaks.  When he’s speaking, the strategically placed prompters make him look engaged with the audience as he “looks around the room.”  In reality, I’m sure he knows the speech well enough to deliver it, but this tool lets him do so in an engaging way (with a little safety net, should he forget).  The real benefit is that he delivers a speech that doesn’t require him to look down or appear anything but completely confident and natural in every word he says.  Call me in the bag, but I’m ok with the teleprompter because confidence is a big part of what we need in the country (and our leader) right now.

Obama is recognized as a great writer- a crafter of phrases that carry subtle nuance. Why not be sure to get them right when it is most important?
