Odd New Rhetorical Circles

September 8, 2009

As Good As You has a post up today with an interview with Maggie Gallagher (National Organization for Bigotry Marriage) on The Ken and Mike Morning Show.  The most frustrating part about this interview is the bizarre logic that “gay people don’t want to get married.” If you define marriage as a relationship between a man and woman, obviously they don’t want to get “married,” but that doesn’t mean they don’t want the rights and civil labels that straight couples get.  Yes, we want to legally change the definition, and playing this weird little rhetorical game doesn’t change the legitimacy of our desires.  This is also an argument that could have been made in 1966 pre-Loving v. Virginia to say that the definition of marriage was between a man and woman of the same race (which it technically was in many states).  Laws are all about defining and redefining legal definitions.  I won’t even get into the other lies, distortions and misrepresentations (though As Good As You does).  You can listen here: Ken and Mike Morning News Show with Maggie Gallagher.

Maggie Gallagher shouldn’t be allowed to get married either because she is overweight, and overweight parents are bad examples for children.
