The Baptist Perspective

September 16, 2009

My mom sent along this blog post from the local Baptist church.  A few key points I’d like to make (other than the fact that whole thing is borderline frightening).

On November 3, 2009 Mainers have the opportunity to go the polls and vote yes to uphold Biblical marriage between a man and a woman.

False.  the referendum is about civil marriage, not biblical marriage.  It’s also not about Torah-marriage or Koran marriage.  It’s about civil recognition and civil rights. If you want your religious belief to determine people’s rights, try Iran.

There is no room within the Christian community to hold what has become the politically correct position on this issue and be faithful to Scripture, to God, to the Church, to children who need a mother and a father, or to people who are struggle with same sex attraction, who desperately need to know that it is sin and that God can offer them forgiveness through repentance and freedom in Christ.

It’s only a struggle when you’re told and made to believe that the way you were born is wrong.  It’s not a struggle if people like Pastor Vermillion didn’t try to impose their radical beliefs on everyone else.

The other important passage here that is a constant refrain throughout anti-equality arguments that a child needs a mother and a father.  Yes, two parents is ideal, but far from necessary.  How many of our leaders were raised by single parents, and how many unsuccessful citizen were raised by two.  By all means, I hope the Yes on 1 forces keep up this argument that should be alienating many of their potential supporters.

great thoughts from you on a blog that doesn’t seem like it could have been written by someone who professes a God of love.
