WCSH Marriage Debate

October 4, 2009

Maine Politics has posted a clip of Mark Mutty and Mary Bonauto debating Question 1 on WCSH’s “In the Arena.”  Bonauto is soft-spoken and I think comes off very well.  She also does a nice job of framing the issue as taking away rights that were granted by the legislature.

Another interesting exchange occurs when Pat Callaghan asks about marriage versus civil unions.  Mutty describes the list of rights that are denied gay couples and says he supports granting all those rights and then says that No on 1 admittedly sees it as more than that–as being about dignity.  He accepts this point and by implication says that dignity shouldn’t be extended to same sex couples.  It’s kind of an odd moment.

The final question is about the amount of money coming from out of state.  As I’ve said all along, where the money comes from matters more to Mainers than other states.  Bonauto handles this question much better than Mutty who blow off this concern (however legitimate or illegitimate one might find it).
