Teaching Marriage–What Does It Do?

October 28, 2009

A remarkably good letter in the Lincoln County News (which came out for Yes on 1).  You may notice the author’s last name makes it particularly appropriate to be featured on Leave it to Seaver.

The yes on 1 ads seem to be saying that if gay marriage is recognized by the state it will have to be taught in schools. They seem to be trying to scare us that it will create new gay people- mostly young ones- if they are “taught gay marriage” in school.

Whenever I see that ad, I struggle to remember at what age I decided to like girls differently than boys. I can’t remember. I think it just happened by itself. I’m sure it had nothing to do with what any teachers were saying in school.

Thinking back to my school years, I also remember kids who struggled to fit in –they seemed different from most of the rest of us. I bet everyone remembers kids like that. In the ’60s, I don’t remember kids ever saying they were gay, but we know some were. They couldn’t say anything back then. They just went through school feeling different: feeling not as good as the rest of us.

I don’t think kids decide to be gay. I think all they decide is if they will be who they are or pretend to be someone they aren’t.
