New Year’s Updates

January 5, 2010

I’ve clearly been remiss in posting lately, but I hope to pick back up in my posting on Leave It To Seaver.  A few stories worth noting that have popped up lately.

  • Oklahoma State Legislator, Sally Kerns is now moving to limit who can get divorces.  The push would mean that married couples could not get a divorce on the basis of “incompatibility” if:
    • There are living minor children of the marriage
    • The parties have been married 10 years or longer
    • Either party files a written objection to the granting of a divorce

Pam’s House Blend has a full recap.  At least her self-righteous belief that her religion should be imposed on others applies to both gay and straight people.  Maybe when people see what it’s like to have a politician interfering in their personal relationships, they’ll think again about marriage equality.

  • The Rhode Island legislature overturned Governor Carcieri’s offensive veto of a bill earlier this year that would allow people to make funeral arrangements for their deceased partners.  AMERICAblog has more.
  • The New Jersey State Senate will be voting on marriage equality Thursday.  The vote was previously scheduled and then postponed because it was expected to pass.  Whether the votes have been secured or supporters simply want to force the debate is yet to be seen.
  • The beat of social conservatives using any unraveled gay relationship as proof of the instability of all gay relationships goes on.  Meanwhile, Karl Rove’s divorce indicates nothing about all straight couples (or Ted Haggard, Larry Craig, John Ensign or Mark Sanford).

And I’ll leave you with this LOVELY rendition of Poker Face.  I think it’s the Christian thing to do to replace the lyrics “Poker Face” to “Whore-ish Face.”  Courtesy of the wack-jobs at Westboro Baptist Church (after the jump if you’re viewing in reader).
